Item of the month

Item of the month

This month's star piece is a bowl in poplar (Salicaceae popular)

The raw material was an awesome piece of burr poplar, made complicated by a bark inclusion deep into what was clearly going to be the base.  Polar is a soft wood prone to tearout which makes it sometimes difficult to turn well, but a burred piece like this has to be treasured.

I decided to make a thick walled bowl with a substantial base.  Some of the bark inclusion had to be kept as, to remove it completely, which I would have liked to do if possible, would have made the bowl too thin.

The result is a bowl displaying the burrs of poplar, some parts of which shimmer as it is also rippled.  Beautiful to look at (OK I am biased but I do love burr poplar) it would also make a superb fruit bowl.

The diameter is 27 cm and it is 10 cm high.  It is available from me at £90, including P&P in the UK.
