Narrow Town Garden

This garden belonging to a terraced house had little space at the front and a long narrow area at the back which was a jungle of overgrown plants and weeds. The house had a modern interior and the owner admitted to knowing nothing about gardening but wanted an enjoyable, low maintenance area to entertain his friends. He was keen to have several areas of lawn.

As the far end was sunnier a path was taken through a pergola to lead to a sitting area with a shed and hidden compost. Inset pebbles were used below the rotary dryer and in the front garden to create textural contrast with the simple planting and paving. Brick banding in the paving helped to increase the sense of width.

There is always something coming up at each season but sufficient low-maintenance base planting to furnish the garden throughout the year.
