SPRING NEWSLETTER

Welcome to the Spring 2009 Newsletter and our new banner logo.

News
Firstly, this will be the first opportunity we have had to send a more public thank you to our great friend and hard-working Chairman of eight years, Alastair Lack. Nothing has ever been too much trouble for him and he has worked constantly to promote the welfare of the garden, the sculptors and the Friends of the Turrill Garden in every way. We shall miss his hands-on energy and his enormous enthusiasm but fortunately he will still be around as a Friend, together with his wife Kate.

However, sad as we are to lose Alastair as Chairman, the wonderful news is that Roy Howarth, one of our sculptors showing with us over many years, has agreed to take on the role. He brings to it a whole new range of skills and ideas and we look forward to seeing both The Friends and the Garden flourish under his leadership. He has already come up with some great schemes as well as our new look banner and improvements we plan for the website.

At the same time, we welcome Caroline Haurie onto our Friends Committee to promote the garden as Publicity Officer. Vera Duchateau helped us greatly in the short time she was with us but pressure of work outside became too strong and she has stepped down from the post. Caroline has experience of PR as well as being a fine craftsman in her own right and we look forward to finding new and even better ways to tell the world about the Turrill.

Looking back over the Autumn and Winter

The Oxford Sculpture Group showed in the Autumn with a very fine collection of work by Ray Castell,Juliet Dyer, Liz Ferris, Andy Hopkins, John Penrose, Lendon Scantlebury, Marie Shepherd, Derek Thomlinson and Malcolm West.

We persuaded some of them to stay on into the Christmas/Winter Exhibition and added work by Pat Elmore, Bernard Johnson, Anna Lever, Vital Peeters and Lesley Williams. Al this remained on sale until the end of February.

Thanks to Alastair Lack we had another fine Box of Delights in St. Edward's School Chapel. We revelled in the wealth of our local musical and reading talent and warmed up afterwards with mulled wine and mince pies and a chance to chat. Do make sure you make a space for it in your diaries next winter or you will be missing a treat and thanks as ever to the generosity of St. Edwards' School for allowing us to use such a fine venue. A collection at the end raised over £130 for the Oxford Alzheimer's Society.

Programme for this year

It just keeps getting better. The 2009 programme is even fuller than ever with superb talent to enjoy in the garden. Everyone is conscious of the recession having an effect on budgets but maybe we should begin to think more about consuming less but what is bought should be of longer-lasting value. If you have a special event coming up this year why not think about joining together to buy a beautiful work of art to give delight for years and keep as an heirloom? One of our aims is to show the work of local sculptors and find ways to support their continued creativity. Be a partner with us in this and do tell your friends and family about the exhibitions.
